Varanasi: Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), lost all its seats to the rivals in Varanasi’s Mahatma Gandhi Vidyapith election on Friday.
Independent as well as students from the National Students Union of India (NSUI) and Samajwadi Chhatra Sabha (SCS) won all seats. An independent candidate, Rahul Dubey, won the post of president. While a student of NSUI-SCS, Roshan Kumar, managed to be selected as vice-president, reports Matters India.
Dubey was associated with SCS, however, he resigned and contested for president’s post as an independent candidate. Defeating Valmiki Upadhyay of ABVP and Varun Yadav of the NSUI-SCS alliance, Dubey won with a margin of more than a thousand votes.
Whereas, Kumar of NSUI-SCS defeated Dayashankar Yadav of ABVP. About 58% of University student had voted in the election.
The police had to intervene as a clash erupted between students during the election, where ABVP supporters allegedly assaulted supporters of independent candidates. They also arrested several students.
