Vadodara (Gujarat): A local charitable trust organised a walkathon on Sunday to raise awareness about breast cancer among women on the occasion of Mother’s Day in Vadodara.
Carrying placards and banners urging women to get timely check-ups done, the participants walked through the streets of Vadodara.
“On Mother’s Day, as a tribute to motherhood, (we) have organised a rally to raise awareness about breast cancer and we want women to come forward and get their diagnosis done on time,” said one of the organisers, Bina Shah.
The walkathon was flagged off by Vadodara Mayor, Bharat Dhangar, who spoke about the importance of celebrating annual events like Mother’s Day.
“Women are increasingly getting diagnosed with breast cancer and by organising such a rally on this day (Mother’s Day) will help in creating awareness among them. Hence, if any woman from a family suffers from breast cancer, this rally will help them to get it checked at an early stage and help them save their life,” he said.
Breast cancer replaced cervical cancer as the leading cause of cancer deaths among women in India, according to a study by The Global Burden of Cancer 2013.
Mother’s Day is observed worldwide on the second Sunday in May every year. (ANI)
