Washington: US-Pakistan relations are deteriorating after formation of new government in Pakistan. The newly elected Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan had made a harsh statement during the past few days, after which US military cut $US300m in aid to Pakistan. Now Washington says if Pakistan wants good relations with the US it should follow US strategy with regard to Afghanistan.
According to media reports the American State Department’s strategy towards Afghanistan is such that Taliban must be forced to work with Kabul by putting military and diplomatic pressure.
Giving clear instructions to Pakistan, the US secretary of State Mike Pompeo had urged Pakistani prime minister Imran Khan to take effective measures against all terrorist present in Pakistan. Initially, Pakistan government had rejected the US stand.
Saying that Islamabad is granting safe haven to insurgents who are waging a 17-year-old war in neighbouring Afghanistan, the Trump administration made a final decision to cancel $US300 million in aid to Pakistan.
