Baghdad, April 11: An American soldier has been killed in northern Iraq, bringing the total death toll to over 4,440 since it invaded Iraq in 2003, a report says.
The US military has withheld the details of the soldier, who was killed on Saturday. It only said that this was the sixth death of an American soldier in the month of April, AP quoted a US military statement as saying.
That puts April on pace to be the deadliest month for US troops in Iraq since September, during which seven soldiers died.
Over one million Iraqis have been killed during the invasion, according to the California-based investigative organization Project Censored.
The US is obligated to withdraw its troops from Iraq by the end of the year in line with a bilateral accord.
Iraq’s Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has warned against any extension to the foreign presence on the strife-weary country’s soil beyond the deadline.
Eight months shy of the deadline, the US is reluctant to pull out its forces and is pressuring Baghdad to extend its stay.
