US slams ‘abusive’ North Korean regime

Washington: The U.S. State Department on Wednesday commented on North Korea’s human rights record, calling the regime “one of the most repressive and abusive governments in the world”. This comes days after the U.S. President Donald Trump praised North Korea’s leader Kim Jong Un’s “honorable” intentions ahead of a possible meeting between the two leaders.

The U.S. condemned decades of “egregious human rights violations” suffered by the North Korean people at the hands of their own government, as quoted by CNN. State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert said, for over 60 years people of North Korea have faced human rights violations and are denied fundamental rights.

The administration, however is looking forward to the Trump and Kim one-on-one meet as it is considered to be a potentially historic summit.
