US safe for Indian students, says Official

Hyderabad, January 20: With racist attacks increasing on Indian students in various countries, particularly Australia, the US government assured that they would provide proper security and ensure safety of Indian students in US universities, US Deputy Chief of Mission Steven White has said.

Steven White distributed English Access Course certificates to rural students at a programme held at FAPCCI Bhavan on Tuesday. The course is organised jointly by the CAP Foundation and the US department of State’s Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs. “Thousands of Indian students prefer US universities for higher education as they provide more security. Many talented Indians working in various sectors in the US contributed to the country’s rise as a super power,’’ he said.

Even as recession hit all business activities, many from India, China and other countries had obtained jobs in Information Technology (IT) and IT Enabled Services (ITES) sectors there, he added.

Juliet Wurr, Public Affairs Officer, American Consulate General, stressed the need to learn English language to improve one’s communication skills. India is becoming a major hub for Information Technology (IT) sector as thousands of Indians speak fluent English, she felt.

Gurpreet Kaur Bhatia, Director-Projects, CAP Foundation, said 100 Inter-level students completed the English Access Course. “At least 200 students have been selected for the second batch that started on Tuesday. The course includes an introduction to American society and culture and field trips to expand the students’ real world experience. It consists of a total 360 hours of activity spread over 20 months, including an intensive summer programme,’’ she said. The programme is targeted at rural students in the age group of 14-18.
