US plane detained in Mumbai

Mumbai, October 18: A US aircraft with 205 Marines on board was forced to land at Mumbai airport today for allegedly violating Indian airspace.

An airport official said the chartered plane was on its way from Fujiriah in the Middle East to Bangkok.

The aircraft was using a civilian call sign which triggered some confusion.

The aircraft landed at Mumbai airport at 7.52 am and has been parked at a remote bay. All passengers are on board.

The official said the Indian Air Force is looking into the issue.

This is the second time since June when an American plane was forced to land in Mumbai.

On June 19 of a chartered AN-124 flying from the US base in Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean, to Kandahar in Afghanistan, had strayed into Indian airspace over Gujarat.

The plane was allowed to proceed a day later after top civilian, intelligence and security agencies questioned the six crew-members of the aircraft.
