US Open: Murray faces Verdasco in Second round

New York: Former world number one Andy Murray will look to capitalize on his smashing start to the US Open while taking on Spanish player Fernando Verdasco in the second round of the men’s singles event here at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Wednesday.

The 31-year-old started off his campaign with a convincing 6-7, 6-3, 7-5, 6-3 win over James Duckworth of Australia in a one-sided clash.

Heading into the second match, Murray holds a boasting 13-1 head to head winning record against his world number thirty-two opponent.

Verdasco’s only victory came during the 2009 Australian Open where the Spaniard had defeated Murray 2-6, 6-1, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 in an epic three-hour quarter-final clash.
Their last meeting was in the final of the Dubai Tennis Championship, last year, where Murray claimed an easy 6-3, 6-2 straight-sets victory over the Spaniard.

Meanwhile, Swiss tennis Maestro Roger Federer and world number six Novak Djokovic moved into the second round after defeating their respective opponents in their opening clashes.
