Former U.S. First Lady and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Tuesday defended her family and the Bushes against claims that the United States has been indirectly encouraging a monarchical system of governance on the lines of what has existed in the United Kingdom.
When asked in an interview with Germany’s Der Spiegel magazine, whether the U.S. is at risk of becoming a monarchy if she or former Florida Governor Jeb Bush wins the presidency in 2016, Clinton replied in the negative, and added that America has a history of political dynasties.
To prove her point, she cited the examples of Theodore and Franklin Roosevelt, John and john Quincy Adams.
John Quincy Adams, the sixth U.S. president, was the son of John Adams, the country’s second president. Former presidents Theodore and Franklin Delano Roosevelt were distant cousins.
Politico quoted Clinton, as saying that certain families in the United States just have a sense of commitment or even a predisposition to want to be in politics.
Clinton said that there are not guarantees in American politics, and that her surname did not help her to become president in 2008.
She described the American political system as open to everyone, and added that the U.S. is a great countr with great eligible people to run for office. (ANI)
