US man accused of conspiring to help Islamic State held

Minneapolis: A man charged with conspiring to help the Islamic State group has been ordered held pending a detention hearing next week.

Abdirizak Mohamed Warsame made an initial appearance in federal court today on charges of conspiracy to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organisation.

Court documents allege Warsame tried to help other young men from Minnesota’s Somali community travel to Syria to fight for the Islamic State.

Nine others also have been charged.

The documents allege Warsame and others settled on a plan of going to Syria by way of Mexico.

The 20-year-old acknowledged a large contingent of family and friends gathered in the courtroom with a slight wave.
