US-led soldier killed in Afghanistan

Kabul, March 05: The explosion of a roadside bomb in southern Afghanistan has claimed the life of a US-led soldier in the war-torn country, NATO announces.

The NATO said in a Saturday statement that the soldier was killed on Friday, without giving further information, a Press TV correspondent reported.

NATO, however, did not reveal the nationality or the exact location of the bomb blast.

Friday death brings to 74 the number of foreign soldiers killed in war-wrecked Afghanistan so far this year.

Another US-led foreign soldier lost his life on Thursday in eastern Afghanistan as Taliban militants intensify their violent campaign against foreign forces in the country.

Afghan authorities said the soldier died during a clash with Taliban militants in Dangam district in the eastern province of Kunar.

Kunar police Chief Khalilullah Ziayee said that several militants were also killed in the fighting.

However, Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid has claimed that at least three NATO troops lost their lives in the gun battle.

Last year was the deadliest for the foreign troops with their casualties standing at 711.

Meanwhile, latest opinion polls show most people in Britain and Canada oppose the Afghan war. Sixty percent of the surveyed Britons said they opposed the war.

Almost two-thirds, 63 percent, of Canadians had the same opinion.

The Vision Critical/Angus Reid survey results come as the security situation has been steadily worsening across Afghanistan over the past few years despite the presence of around 150,000 US led foreign troops in the country.
