US-led soldier killed in Afghanistan

Kabul, January 31: “An International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) service member died following an improvised explosive device attack in eastern Afghanistan today,” an ISAF statement said on Monday without giving more details, dpa reported.

The military did not release the deceased’s nationality or the exact location of the attack.

Earlier on Sunday, four German soldiers lost their lives when a roadside bomb struck their military vehicle in the northern part of the Asian country.

The latest Pentagon figures show roadside bombs killed 60 percent more US troops in Afghanistan in 2010 compared to the previous year.

The improvised explosive device (IED), also known as roadside bombs, claimed the lives of 268 American troops in Afghanistan in 2010.

Pentagon figures indicate that 619 US troops have so far been killed and another 5,764 wounded in roadside bomb attacks in Afghanistan since the US-led invasion of the country in October 2001.

Last year’s casualties for NATO soldiers stood at 711 foreign soldiers.

The developments come at a time when the US-led war in Afghanistan seems to be at a crucial stage with militants believed to be gaining ground.

Security is at its worst levels in the war-torn country since the start of the US-led invasion back in 2001.
