US-led soldier killed in Afghan war

Kabul, June 09: “An ISAF service member died following an improvised explosive device (IED) attack in southern Afghanistan today,” said a brief Thursday statement by the military contingent, quoted by Xinhua news agency.

The military force, however, did not announce the name or nationality of the victim.

Roadside bombs and IEDs are by far the most lethal weapons used by Taliban militants against foreign troops, government forces as well as civilians in Afghanistan.

At least 236 foreign troops have so far been reported killed in the war-ravaged Afghanistan this year.

Last year, nonetheless, remains the deadliest year for foreign military casualties with a death toll of 711. The number eclipsed the previous record of 521, set in 2009.

Hundreds of civilians have also been killed in US-led airstrikes and ground operations in various parts of Afghanistan over the past few months, with Afghans becoming increasingly outraged over the seemingly endless number of deadly assaults.

The growing death toll of Afghan civilians as a result of NATO and US military operations in the country has fueled tensions between Afghan President Hamid Karzai and his Western allies.
