‘US hypocritical over ME events’

Washington, February 21: A political scholar says that the US has on the surface tried pleasing the people over recent Middle East events while supporting the region’s dictators by dealing with them ”under the table.”

US officials are trying to “please the people and make them think that they are doing something but at the same time they are dealing under the table with these dictators, giving them assurances and logistical aids,” director of the Institute for Gulf Affairs, Ali al-Ahmed said during an interview with Media US Desk on Sunday.

The US has recognized that after losing its dictator allies it must deal with the people.

“Washington’s reaction to the events in the Middle East has been very careful and calculated to make it appear that they are doing the right thing,” he added.

He pointed out that the fact that all the dictators in the Middle East are US allies reveals that the US is not really looking for democracy in the region.

Al-Ahmed said US support of the dictators is seen in its providing them with weapons and financial aid, and that Washington is still unrealistically dealing with the idea of replacing the dictators.

According to his statements, Washington is under the impression that the weakening of dictators in the region will strengthen Iran’s position. “Washington is afraid that if the Bahraini dictator collapses this makes Iran stronger.”
