US helicopter crashes in Afghanistan

An American Black Hawk helicopter with four people on board has crashed in southwestern Afghanistan, a US defense official says.

“We’re assuming they’re American,” the official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said on Thursday, in reference to the people on board.

The crash might have occurred due to bad weather, the official said.

However, the official did not disclose whether the Americans on board had been killed or wounded in the crash.

Meanwhile, NATO’s International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) released a statement saying an investigation into the cause of the incident had been launched.

“The crash site is secured; the cause is under investigation. Additional information will be released as appropriate,” ISAF said.

Several choppers belonging to the US-led military have crashed or have been downed in recent months in the war-torn country.
