‘US has double standards on rights’

Tehran, November 22: An Iranian human rights official says the US has always adopted a double standard toward the rights issue, ignoring international regulations on human rights and torturing people in notorious prisons.

“The US has put Iran on the list of state sponsors of terrorism, adopted domestic laws against the country (Iran) and overshadowed Iran’s judicial immunity,” Mohammad-Hassan Ziaifar, the secretary of the Islamic Human Rights Commission, was quoted by IRNA as saying on Sunday.

“Dozens of lawsuits have been filed against Iran in American circles,” he went on to say.

However, the official underlined, Iran has reciprocated in kind by tasking its Ministry of Justice with dealing with civil cases against foreign governments.

Ziaifar also underscored the importance of dealing with the accusations leveled against the Islamic Republic and defending the country against cases brought against it.

Elsewhere in his remarks, the Iranian rights official touched upon the scourge of terrorism.

“When it comes to terrorism, due regard should be paid to economic, religious, cultural, social and psychological factors,” he said.

Measures have been adopted in Iran concerning the fight against financing terrorism, including the drawing up of a law on fighting money laundering and other regulations regarding the war on drugs, he said.

Another measure adopted, he added, is Iran’s joining international conventions.

“Iran has so far joined six of 13 existing international conventions, … and is considering joining other conventions in relevant institutions,” the official underlined.
