‘US drone downed in Afghanistan’

Kabul, January 25: An Afghan militant group has released footage of what it says is a downed US drone aircraft in the Logar province in eastern Afghanistan.

The militant group’s undated video shows that a pilotless jet is lying on the ground.

The spokesman for the group also claimed that the men of the group had also downed three more US unmanned aircrafts in war-hit Afghanistan over the past month.

The group is led by former Afghan Prime Minister Gulbuddin Hekmatyar and is operating in northeastern Afghanistan.

The unsanctioned attacks by US unmanned planes on Pakistan’s border with Afghanistan almost claimed the lives of 1,200 lives last year.

The United States claims the drone strikes target militants who cross the Pakistani border into neighboring Afghanistan. Official figures, however, show the attacks mostly result in the death of Afghan civilians.

The drone campaign has intensified since US President Barack Obama took office in 2009.
