US dollar ends cheaper against rupee

Mumbai, October 29: Rupee ends cheaper against dollar at Rs 44.43/44 per.

The US dollar ended cheaper against the rupee at Rs 44.43/44 per dollar, but the Pound Sterling turned higher at Rs 70.79/81 per pound at the close of the Interbank Foreign Exchange Market (Forex) here on Friday.

Snapping its three-day losing string, the rupee recovered by 10 paise against the US currency following late rise in equities and dollar selling by exporters.

Fresh capital outflows, however, restricted some of the gains in rupee, dealers said.

At the Interbank Foreign Exchange market, the domestic unit opened at 44.49/50 a dollar against its last close of 44.53/54 and immediately touched a low of 44.60.

Dollar demand from importers, mainly oil refiners, to meet their monthly requirements also put pressure on the rupee in early trading, a dealer said.

Also, fresh capital outflows weighed on the rupee.

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) pulled out USD 125.35 million (about Rs 557 crore) on October 28, the first time in current month.

However, dollar selling by exporters and some banks later and recovery in equities helped the rupee recover to a high of 44.

The following are the Interbank Forex and RBI rates:

(In Rupees Per Unit) Unit Interbank RBI Reference US Dollar 44.43/44 US Dollar Rs 44.54 Pound Sterling 70.79/81 Euro Rs 61.81 Euro 61.53/55 Japanese Yen (100) 55.
