Tehran, March 08: Iran’s Parliament (Majlis) Speaker Ali Larijani has deplored imposing of unpopular and despotic rulers in the region, saying the US dictatorship and despotism has contributed to terrorism and extremism.
“The ongoing events in the region and the collapse of dictatorial governments will serve national security and peace and negate terrorism in a long period,” said Larijani in a meeting with the UN Secretary General’s Special Representative in Iraq, Ed Melkart, in the Iranian capital city of Tehran on Monday.
“The creation of democratic governments in the region would help disprove terrorism and establish sustainable security and stability in Iraq,” he added, Majlis news agency (ICANA) reported.
Larijani noted that true democracy, respect for Iraq’s national sovereignty and withdrawal of the occupiers would serve as basic solutions to the country’s development.
“Iran’s principled policy is based on respect for Iraq’s territorial integrity, independence and political sovereignty and the strengthening of its national solidarity and democracy,” said the Majlis speaker.
He emphasized that Iran has so far spared no efforts in helping the government and nation of the war-torn Iraq.
Meanwhile, the UN representative highlighted the significance of Iraq’s cooperation with its neighboring countries and noted that the Iraqi government is currently faced with major challenges, including terrorism and unemployment.
Melkart emphasized that good relations with regional states as well as the Tehran-Baghdad ties play an important role in helping the Iraqi government tackle its ongoing problems.
