Tehran, October 14: The US says the Iranian economy is vulnerable to new sanctions it may face if Tehran refuses to halt its uranium enrichment program.
“When you look at Iran’s economy, it has vulnerabilities. And we think there are still opportunities to apply pressure, if Iran is unwilling to address the concerns… about its nuclear aspirations,” said US State Department spokesman Philip Crowley.
US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said earlier in Moscow that Iran could face new sanctions if diplomacy fails to persuade Tehran to halt its uranium enrichment program.
Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Tuesday that Iran sanctions would be “counterproductive”.
“Certainly, it’s safe to say that the US, Russia, China may look at the prospect of sanctions from a slightly different vantage point,” Crowley told reporters asking about the Moscow talks.
Tehran has repeatedly declared that it will never relinquish the Iranian nation’s legitimate nuclear rights under Western pressure.
