US congratulates Pak on passage of 18th amendment

Washington, April 10: The US on Friday welcomed the passage of the landmark 18th Amendment by Pakistan’s National Assembly that is aimed at stripping the sweeping powers of the country’s President.

“We congratulate Pakistan’s political parties, its Parliament and especially the members of the constitutional reform committee on effectively tackling complex and substantial issues like this major reform,” Assistant Secretary of State for Public Affairs PJ Crowley told reporters at his daily news conference.

“As a friend of Pakistan, we applaud the efforts taken by Pakistani political leaders to achieve national consensus on political reforms,” he said.

Crowley said the Deputy Secretary of State, Jack Lew, has arrived in Pakistan.

“He had productive meetings today with Foreign Minister Qureshi and Adviser to the Prime Minister on Finance Sheikh. He also is spending time meeting with embassy personnel, to discuss our Pakistan assistance programs,” he said.
