‘US backs Yemenis to protect interests’

Sanaa, April 06: The United States has shifted its favor from Yemen’s government to the revolutionary forces in the Middle Eastern country in order to protect its own interests, says an American law expert.

“Whenever you see a tilt in forces toward any of the forces whether that be the government forces or opposition forces, the third player will always tilt its balance in favor of the winner. So, this is the case with the US in Yemen,” Dr. Syed Ali Wasif, professor of international law, said in an exclusive interview with Media on Wednesday.

He added that despite the fact that Washington recognized embattled Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh for years, it is now shifting towards the opposition forces in Yemen in an effort to win their sympathy and pursue its national interests in the Middle Eastern country.

“American policymakers have conceived they are losing the government of Yemen and any day now you will hear of its downfall. So, they are shifting toward the revolutionary forces or opposition in the hope of gaining their sympathy so that if tomorrow forms a new revolutionary government, it would have a soft corner for the US. The main goal is to prolong the national interests of the US,” he went on to say.

In Yemen, hundreds of thousands of people have turned out for regular demonstrations in cities including the capital Sana’a, Aden, and Taiz, calling for corruption and unemployment to be tackled and demanding President Saleh to step down from power.

The protests, however, have been met with crackdowns by riot police or supporters of President Saleh armed with knives and batons.

Saleh has said he will not seek another term in office in 2013 but has vowed to defend his regime “with every drop of blood.”

According to local reports, the death toll in the country has surpassed 300 since anti-government protests began in late January.
