Urological surgery was in vogue from ancient times

Public Garden Walkers’ Association conducted its 202nd public health monthly lecture yesterday morning at Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Oriental Research Institute, Public Garden. Dr. Sanjay Sinha, Senior Urologist, Apollo Hospital delivered a lecture on “The History of Urology in India from Sushruta to the Surgical Robot”.

Speaking on this topic, Dr. Sinha said that practice in Urological surgery has been in vogue in India for the past 2700 years. 700 years before the birth of Christ. Sushrutha used to perform such surgery on the banks of River Ganga. He was a famous surgeon. In his book, ‘Sushrutha Samhita’ he has described the removal of obstacles from the urinary tract. This book also contains the details of treatments for several ailments. He said that these days, for prostate complications, surgery is not necessary, medication is sufficient. If Urinary complications are detected at the early stage, they can be cured and there is less chance of the patient suffering form cancer. In such cases, laser surgery is useful.

By performing laser surgery, blood flow and flow of other liquid matters could be minimized. In most urological centers, removal of stone is being considered unnecessary these days.

Mr. Ghulam Yazdani, Chairman of the Association advised the audience to bear in mind the English proverb ‘Health is Wealth’. He requested them to take advantage of these monthly health lectures. Dr. Jagjivan Asthana entertained the gathering by his poems. Yoga expert Mr. Ibrahim Jeelani demonstrated some Yoga exercises.
