Uproar in Kashmir Assembly, opposition demands Afzal Guru”s mortal remains

The Jammu and Kashmir State Assembly was adjourned on Friday after uproarious scenes over the opposition Peoples Democratic Party”s (PDP) demand to discuss parliament attack convict Afzal Guru”s hanging.

PDP members started shouting slogans over a demand for passage of an adjournment motion.

Although Speaker Mubarak Gul attempted to restore order within the house, a relentless opposition continued to disrupt proceedings, forcing its adjournment for an hour.

PDP President Mehbooba Mufti said the mortal remains of Afzal Guru should be handed over to his family so that last rites can be performed.

“Basically, our party has called for an adjournment motion where we want to discuss about the present situation in Jammu and Kashmir after the execution of Afzal Guru and also the mortal remains of Afzal Guru should be handed over to his family so that last rites according to our religion could be performed,” said Mufti.

Guru was hanged at Delhi”s Tihar Jail on February 9. He was buried inside the prison complex soon after his execution.

Guru was convicted of conspiracy in the December 2001 attack on Parliament and was sentenced to death by the Supreme Court in 2004.

On 13th December 2001, five heavily armed gunmen stormed the Parliament complex and opened indiscriminate fire, killing nine persons. Guru was arrested within hours after the attack from a bus in the national capital.
