The UN Security Council reportedly held an urgent meeting recently to discuss the deepening Ukraine crisis, evoking strong criticism and accusations.
According to CNN, speaking first, Oscar Fernandez-Taranco, U.N. assistant secretary-general for political affairs, set the tone for discussions, saying that Ukraine “teeters on the brink.”
Taranco said that it is not just Ukraine that will suffer from a scenario where the likelihood of further bloodshed and violent clashes grows by the hour.
He said that Russia, which shares a large border with Ukraine, as well as the broader European region, faces spillover effect of potentially severe consequences, adding that such scenarios will also have repercussions for the entire international community.
Blaming Russia for the unrest, Ukraine and its allies agreed that the situation was dangerous and needed to be contained before things went out of hand.
Calling for national dialogue, Vitaly Churkin, the Russian ambassador to the United Nations said that further escalation of this must be swiftly stopped, adding that it is the West that will determine the opportunity to avoid civil war in Ukraine.
The UN held the meeting on the same day that Ukraine acting President Oleksandr Turchynov issued a promise of amnesty for pro- Russia separatists in eastern Ukraine, along with a warning that anyone supporting the takeover of government buildings would be held responsible for their actions, the report added.
