Washington, july 15: The three-member UN Commission of Inquiry established to investigate into the facts and circumstances of the assassination of former Pakistani prime minister Benazir Bhutto would soon arrive in Islamabad.
The commission is slated to arrive in the Pakistani capital later this week. This would be the first working visit of the commission, which began its activities on July 1, the United Nations spokesman, Michele Montas told reporters at her daily press briefing at the world body headquarters in the New York.
The Commission’s mandate, agreed to in consultation with the Pakistan, is to determine the facts and circumstances of the assassination.
“It does not include undertaking a criminal investigation. Responsibility for any criminal investigation and the prosecution of the perpetrators remains with the Pakistani authorities,” Montas said.
The Commission, which will carry out its fact-finding activities in Pakistan and abroad, would submit its final report by the end of December 2009, she said.
The Secretary-General will share the report with the Government of Pakistan and submit it to the Security Council for information.
