Unpalatable food provided for mid-day meal

Hyderabad, February 1: Mid-day meals were started by the state government with the following objectives; to avoid classroom hunger, to increase school enrolment, to increase school attendance, to address malnutrition, etc.

This mid-day meal scheme started off as an incentive to coax parents of economically underprivileged backgrounds to send their children to school, but having a few morsels, we can vouch for the fact that the meal served provides a pretty good reason to bunk.

Such poor quality rice is supplied under the scheme, after eating which, the children instead of becoming healthy, will become ill. If we examine the implementation of mid day meal scheme, in majority of the government schools of Hyderabad, we will know that students do not like the food and the scheme has remained for the name-sake. The food supplied to the schools is found lying in the garbage bins.

The rice used for cooking midday meal is quite thick and is inedible. The ‘dal’ is nothing short of water, the pulse can hardly be spotted. Even the food supplied in jails may taste better. If any minister tries to eat the food he will lose his teeth; it will be an ordeal for him to have a couple of morsels.

Instead of increasing school attendance, mid-day meals will surely increase hospital attendance. Hence it is imperative that supply of nutritious food is ensured for school children.
