Hyderabad, July 29: In a bid to veer city students towards learning foreign languages like German, the German Institute at the Goethe-Zentrum has announced a host of tie-ups with educational bodies and Universities in the City.
“Apart from the University of Hyderabad, Goethe Zentrum has ventured into Osmania University and the English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU) for setting up courses and language programmes therein,” revealed executive director Amita Desai at German theatre performance, held at a city school on Tuesday.
Organised by a students’ theatre group of the Goethe Zentrum, the performance, based around a musical play in German garnered considerable support from the assemblage of students and institute members present, many of whom, revealed Desai, “were unfamiliar with the German language.” Part of an ongoing project involving school children in the City, the Centre’s activities, said Desai “are slated to expand beyond merely teaching the German language, to inculcating a sense of the culture of the continent among young learners in Hyderabad.” Coming to the set of tie-ups with the educational bodies in the city, Desai elaborated, saying that “with the setting up of the School of Foreign Languages at the University of Hyderabad and programmes like the European Languages Day at the EFLU, the German Centre has moved closer to academics in the City.” Desai indicated that given the market scenario in Europe, learning a language like German could benefit students prospecting abroad.
“The knowledge of a foreign language can give students an edge over their peers in non-English speaking countries,” she said, indicating that there might be a considerable job market in the offing for students and professionals wanting to tap into foreign shores.
The German Institute has also tied up in this regard with private institutes like the Ramakrishna Mutt, which offers foreign language courses for professionals and enthusiasts.
