ESTABLISH TRUST BETWEEN YOUR MUSLIM BROTHERS AND SISTERS:
Those who wish to destroy Islam (and this is something they will NEVER be able to do) will sow seeds of mis-trust amongst the Muslims. Instead, establish trust – we are all capable of building relationships, so BUILD THEM. Start to trust your Muslims Brothers and Sisters and stop trying to do one over on them. Build trust little by little – do not betray this trust. Do not trust blindly as there are hypocrites in the Ummah today, just as there were in the time of the Prophet Muhammad, SallAllahu Alaihi Wa Sallam.
Abu Hurairah, RadiyAllahu Anhu, reported that the Prophet of Allah, SallAllahu Alaihi Wa Sallam, said:
“A believer is his brother’s mirror. A believer is a brother to a believer, for he looks after his affairs and protects him from behind.”
[Bukhari’s Book of Morals and Manners, also Abu Dawud]
That’s another difference out of the way.
BE KIND TO YOUR BROTHERS AND SISTERS IN ISLAM:
Show the best of characters to your brothers and sisters in Islam. Don’t be so harsh that you cannot reach them. Give da’wah and guidance to them in the best manner and with PATIENCE. Show them gratitude, good manners and make them feel good about meeting you. And when your brother and sister is wrong, show good etiquette in correcting them – don’t do it in public and embarass them nor dishonour them. Avoid heated arguments, discussions and debates. Be kind – that’s not a lot to ask. The Prophet Muhammad (SallAllahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) always showed good character, even when he was being persecuted (read the Seerah of the Prophet Muhammad, SAWS, for examples). Learn from this (Myself included).
WORK TOGETHER ON THE THINGS WE DO HAVE IN COMMON:
There are many differences between our brothers and sisters – if you concentrate on these, we will always argue. Instead, focus on those things that we have in common. Here are some examples: be united in defending Islam against the non-Muslims, do not show disagreement in public; be united in fasting; be united in charity work; be united in showing brotherhood/sisterhood and kindness. If we start to unite on these easy things and build up our relationships, it will become easier to overcome the more difficult differences.
Do not chase the duniya
If you value duniya so much, you will lose sight of the hereafter, the problems faced by the Ummah today and you will see Muslims being disgraced – we need to save each other from that. So change your attitude – the duniya is not our salvation; it is just a distraction, so do not be so tempted that you waste your wealth. If a starving child was in front of you, you wouldn’t go shopping for that latest gadget – you would give straight away to help that child. So change your attitude to help Muslims around the world.
EDUCATE YOURSELVES IN DEEN:
This is so important. We are all at different levels of learning, which in itself can cause friction. But if we have an open mind and make it easy to see Allah’s Guidance, then we will find so many things in common between our brothers and sisters.
Look for the truth – do not Blindly follow. We are not in times where we can trust everything we hear – it needs to be verified and authenticated, otherwise how do you work out who is telling the truth? Do you just side with those who you feel inclined towards rather than the truth? If so, what makes you different from those who are criticised in the Qur’an about following their forefathers?
As with relying upon authentic hadiths, ensure that you learn about Islam using hadith that you know the Prophet Muhammad (SallAllahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) taught us. Question your imams and elders – don’t be unkind and disrespectful to them. Pick up the truth from them and leave behind the falsehood and the mistakes.
BE SINCERE AND PATIENT:
If you’re not sincere then you will cause fitna. If you truly want to follow the Truth from Allah, then be sincere about this. Don’t be political, defensive, and blindly loyal to people who make major mistakes in deen and mislead the people. The Sahabas used to stand up to each other and in this way, they ensured that everyone stayed on the Truth and did not stray into the falsehood.
FINAL NOTE:
Remember the enemies of Islam want us divided so we waste energy fighting each other. Whilst we do that, they spread injustice and tyranny in the world. They spread lies and establish regimes that support their lies. They force countries to submit to them. They will not be able to do any of this if the Muslims start to do the above and be united.
