Union Cabinet to discuss Telangana bill today

The Union Cabinet will discuss the Group of Ministers’ (GoM) report on Telangana and the draft bill on the creation of the new state on Thursday.

After an hour-long meeting yesterday, Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde said that the Cabinet will take up the GoM recommendations on Telangana on Thursday.

According to the GoM proposal, Andhra Pradesh will be bifurcated equally with each state having 21 Lok Sabha seats each, 147 seats each in the Assembly and 45 seats in the Legislative Council.

It is being speculated that the draft report prepared by the GoM proposes addition of four more districts in Telangana from Rayalaseema. A final decision on the same is likely to be taken today.

Meanwhile, Telangana Rashtra Samiti chief K Chandrasekhar Rao has called for a day-long bandh today opposing the inclusion of Anantapur and Kurnool districts.

Thousands of Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation, health department officials and will go on strike today while autos and buses will observe the bandh and not ply on the road.
