Union Cabinet clears Triple Talaq ordinance for repromulgation

New Delhi: The Union Cabinet has cleared the triple talaq ordinance for repromulgation. The ordinance is about to get lapsed later this month.

As reported by Times Now News, the cabinet approved the ordinance at a meeting on Thursday. It will now be sent to the President for his assent.

Aiming at making the Islamic practice of instant divorce a penal offence, the triple talaq ordinance is being reissued as the Narendra Modi government failed in its bid to get it converted it into law. The bill has been passed in the Lok Sabha but got stuck in the Rajya Sabha.

The ordinance is due to lapse on January 22. Unless repromulgated, an ordinance is valid for a period of six months. It lapses if it is not replaced by a bill cleared by Parliament within 42 days (six weeks) of the start of the session.
