Unhappy over her proposed engagement, woman commits suicide

Unhappy over her scheduled engagement with a man she did not wish to marry, a 25-year-old woman committed suicide at her friend’s home in west Delhi, police said today.

The woman, Ritu Rawat, hanged herself from a ceiling fan in her friend’s rented accommodation in Sector-16 of Dwarka here.

She left behind a suicide note addressed to her mother in which she has blamed no one for her extreme step.

Ritu worked at a call centre in Gurgaon and he shared a rented flat with a female colleague in the same apartments complex as her male friend.

According to the police, she spent most of her time with her male friend, who had a strained relationship with his wife and was seeking a divorce, and the two had become very close.

The friend was the one who had found her hanging from the fan in the drawing room of his flat, where he lived alone, yesterday morning and had called the police.

The male friend, on being questioned, claimed innocence and said Ritu was depressed by her proposed engagement as she did not want to marry the man chosen by her mother, police said.

However, while he was being questioned the suicide note was recovered from the body, it said.

“The woman has blamed no one for her suicide in a note found in her possession. She has addressed the note to her mother,” a senior police officer said.

Police said it did not suspect any foul play in the incident.
