UNESCO heritage tag for Bijapur monuments

In a significant step towards giving the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) heritage tag to the magnificent Adil Shahi monuments of Bijapur, the District Administration has decided to appoint a consultancy to prepare a broad plan for submitting it to the UNESCO for consideration.

Informing this to media persons on the sidelines of International Museum Day programme at the historic, Gol Gumbaz here on May 18, Deputy Commissioner, Ritvik Ranjan Pandey said that the consultancy would be given this job shortly.

He said that the decision had been taken to appoint the same consultancy that had prepared similar report for monuments of Hampi and Mysore for getting UNESCO’s heritage monument tag.

“ Though obtaining UNESCO tag for the city’s monuments is a long-drawn process which could take a few years at least, however the district administration would initiate a process towards it”, Mr. Pandey said.

He also added that an extensive signature campaign would also be initiated in order to spread awareness among the people on getting heritage tag for the enchanting monuments of the city.

It may be noted that the Advisory Committee for World Heritage Matters, during its meeting held last year in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, had approved to include monuments of Bijapur district in the list to be submitted to the UNESCO for heritage tag.

According to the officials of Archeological Survey of India, the district has around 80 protected monuments by the ASI.

Meanwhile, in order to spread awareness on the importance of the monuments and also to boost the tourism sector of the district, a week-long programmes would be held between May 18 and May 24, which include debates, painting competitions, seminars etc. for the students.

Mr. Pandey said that the ancient mode of transport; theTonga( horse driven cart) would be used to popularise the monuments where visitors would be taken around the city’s 14 popular monuments. He informed that theTongaowners had been given special training in this regard.
