An undertrial here allegedly committed suicide in the prison premises, prompting his family members to blame the police for his death.
Pawan, a resident of Bhairokheda village and accused of robbery, was found dead under mysterious circumstances in the washroom of barrack number 2, jail authorities said.
The matter came to light this morning when during attendance Pawan was found missing, Vice Superintendent Sewa Singh said.
He was later found hanging from the ceiling of the prison’s washroom, Singh said.
Pawan was arrested on October 11 for looting Rs 1.5 lakh from a petrol pump in July and was then sent to judicial custody.
Holding the police responsible for Pawan’s death, his family members have alleged that Pawan was tortured during police interrogation and that the police officials had demanded Rs 4.5 lakh out of which Rs 1 lakh had already been given.
The judicial magistrate is looking into the incident, the authorities said.
