Former Pakistan players have slammed coach Waqar Younis for the way the ex-speedster has handled the team during its losses against England in the ongoing one-day series.
Former captain Javed Miandad was clear in his mind that Waqar was responsible for the poor performances and should be removed.
“I am disappointed at our performances and the responsibility is not only with the captain but also the head coach,” Miandad said.
“The playing eleven is being finaliszed on the personal likes and dislikes of Waqar and that is hurting the team,” he added.
Also Ahmed Shehzad’s absence from the playing XI has been a matter of debate with many believing the team management is targetting specific individuals.
“Clearly Ahmed Shehzad is a victim of nepotism because if he has disciplinary issues why is he in the squad in the first place,” he questioned.
Former batsman and chief coach Mohsin Khan also blamed the team management for the defeats.
“I don’t know what they are trying to do. How can you not select Shehzad and who is responsible for the shuffling of players and rapid changes in the team,” he said.
“This is the Pakistan team not someone’s personal team and there should be accountability. The team management including the head coach should be asked about their decisions,” he said.
Mohsin said he had always opposed the appointment of Waqar as head coach because of his shady past.
Ex-pacer Sarfaraz Nawaz also said that he was not surprised at the doubts raised by former England captain Michael Vaughan over Pakistan’s defeats.
“Waqar was also coach in 2010 and the Pakistan board must question Azhar about the defeats.”
Former captain Rashid Latif said wrong selections and too much tinkering with the combination had led to the defeats.
“It is unfortunate that Pakistan is trailing in the series which we should have won easily. Credit to the England side for doing so well.”
Veteran batsman Muhammad Yousuf said Pakistan’s batting had been exposed by England even on the flat pitches of UAE.
“The team management including Waqar should be asked about their decision to not pick Shehzad and the playing eleven for these matches. Waqar has a history of sidelining senior players which is damaging for our cricket,” he said.
