UN not to name suspects in Bhutto probe

London, July 18: The UN team investigating the assassination of former Pakistani prime minister Benazir Bhutto vows to bring out the truth about the case, but says it will not seek to name culprits.

“The UN Commission of Inquiry would ensure that its final report clearly establishes the truth regarding the facts and circumstances of the assassination of Benazir Bhutto, Heraldo Munoz, the Head of a three member UN team told a news conference in Islamabad on Friday, a Press TV correspondent reported.

The three-member team arrived in Pakistan on Thursday for their first visit as part of a probe into the circumstances surrounding the attack that killed Bhutto at a campaign rally in Rawalpindi on December 27, 2007, just two months after returning to Pakistan from exile to compete a third term in power.

“If you think that there will be smoking guns in terms of names, our report is not that,” Munoz said.

Munoz did not rule out attempting to interview the former president Pervez Musharraf who would ‘probably have important things to say’.

He said that the commission will submit a report to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon by the end of December. The report will be shared with the Pakistani government and the UN Security Council.
