UK: Woman who harassed, abused Muslim neighbour spared jail

London: Cheryl McKeown (32) who harassed and abused Muslim neighour has been spared jail.

According to the report published in Daily Mail, she threatened to kill her neighbor, Koutar Mrimou. She also blew smoke in her child’s face.

Cheryl McKeown yelled, “This is becoming an Islamic Estate, you need to get your children out of this country.”

Last September, McKeown confronted daughter of Ms. Mrimou and told, “Ask your mother to get out of here”. She also threatened to kill Mrimou. After the incident, Ms. Mrimou called the police.

Narrating another incident which took place in April last year, the prosecutor said that McKeown had filmed persons who had visited the house of the victim.

Talking about the effect of the harassment, the victim said that it had a huge impact on her life.

It may be mentioned that McKeown was never convicted. However, in February 2018, she received a caution for harassment.

Anita Reece who was defending the case said that McKeown has two young children. Ms. Anita also highlighted the mental health issues of McKeown.

Ms. Anita further said that McKeown and the victim was a good friend and McKeown will seek an apology from the victim.

After hearing the arguments, District Judge Michael Snow suspended her 26-week jail for two years.

He said that McKeown’s activities were due to her perception of the victim’s religion. He added that such behavior will not be tolerated.

It may be noted that McKeown cannot contact the victim, her family and witnesses in the case.

Now, as per order, she should pay compensation of £250 and a victim surcharge of £115.
