Hyderabad: An independent study done by a team of doctors at All India Institute of Medical Science was published in World Medical Journal, in an article titled “Diabetes Type 4: A Paradigm Shift in Understanding of Glaucoma, Brain specific Diabetes and Candidature of Insulin as a Therapeutic Agent”. The study revealed that the Type 4 diabetes can affect human brain and eye tissues. Dr. Faeq Muneeb who carried out the study informed that this type of diabetes is different from the one accompanied by high blood glucose levels and afflicts brain, eye tissue.

The study carried out by Dr Muneeb Faeq and Dr Tanuj Dada has been labelled ‘Diabetes Type 4’. Dr Muneeb Faeq explained that this type can occur independently in the brain, even if the patient has other types of known diabetes or does not have diabetes. It is found that the rest of the body may not have high glucose levels but there may be a problem in functioning of the brain and eye tissues.

So far Type 2 and Type 3 diabetes were common which are such that there is a defect in the processing of insulin and glucose in the brain. Most Indians are hit by Type 2 diabetes.
