Mumbai, April 08: A two-year-old boy from Shivaji Nagar died after being hit by an SUV, barely 10 feet from his house, on Tuesday night.
At 11.15pm, Mohammad Imran was trying to cross the road in front of his house to reach a sweet shop on the opposite side when he was hit. The vehicle stopped after hitting Imran. Since several passers-by surrounded the vehicle, the driver and his companion had no option but to get off the vehicle, an investigating officer said. They told the people that they would take Imran to a nearby hospital.
“The accident happened in a busy lane,” assistant police inspector Suresh Bhosle said. “It is very difficult for an SUV to go through this road, forget fleeing.” The two took Imran to Vikas Nursing home, Bhosle said. “But doctors there told them to take Imran to Rajawadi Hospital because they did not have the necessary equipment to treat him.”
Imran’s uncle and parents reached the nursing home within a few minutes. They, along with the driver and his companion, took Imran to Rajawadi, the officer said. Doctors of Rajawadi, however, declared him dead before admission. When they came to know of this, the two fled with their vehicle.
“We have talked with a few people from the locality,” senior inspector Dundappa Jodgujari from the Shivaji Nagar police station said. “A couple of people seem to know them. Their information will help us to track them down.” The police have booked the two for rash driving and causing death due to negligence.
A few local people claimed that the driver and his companion were drunk.
