Two on trial over bid to kidnap 85-year-old

Dubai, June 18: A 85-year-old Canadian businessman of Indian origin escaped from at least three persons who allegedly tried to kidnap him from outside his house, a court heard on Thursday.

Two of them, including a Pakistani technician and an Indian manager, went on trial in the Court of First Instance on the charges of bid to kidnap posing as police officers, theft and criminal complicity.

According to the arraignment sheet, the Indian manager, aged 48, instigated the kidnap as he used to work for the Canadian. Two other men are still wanted by the authorities.

The complainant was about to step out of his car driven by his driver outside his house in Nad Al Hamar when a car intercepted them on March 23.

According to the testimony he gave to the Public Prosecution, two men stepped off that car. “One of them (a Pakistani absconder) came towards my driver and spoke to him in weak English. He claimed to be an officer from Dubai Police and asked for our IDs,” the Canadian claimed.

The other man, also a Pakistani, came towards the complainant and pulled him out of the car and tried to push him into their car.

However, the complainant managed to break free and walked towards the street. He tried to make a phone call but the man who tried to push him into their car told him not to do so. He again tried to grab the complainant but the latter resisted and warned him that he would call the police.

The assailant again claimed he was a cop but he sped away with his accomplices shortly after. They stole the complainant’s car key.

The complainant took down the car’s registration number and called the police.

The police officers learnt that the car the defendants used was taken on rent. They arranged with rent-a-car agency to lure the Pakistani man and arrested him.

During interrogation at the Rashidiya police post, the Pakistani admitted that the manager instigated him to intercept the complainant and rob him.
