Crime Branch of Delhi Police on Thursday arrested two train robbers and recovered 67 stolen diamonds from their possession.
According to the police, the duo— identified as Mukesh and Sunil— of late even assaulted some police staff. The looted articleswas sold by these habitual crooks in several cities including Delhi, Hansi, Hisar and Bhiwani. Most recently, they had looted a woman of her jewellery on a Chandigarh- bound train.
“ During interrogation, Mukesh and Sunil confessed that they and their associates stole gold and diamond jewellery articles from a lady passenger on board the Chandigarh Shatabdi Express on March 21,” said Additional Commissioner ( crime branch) Ravinder Yadav.
The gang used to operate in AC- coach of long- distance trains. After carefully selecting the train that fit their timings, the gang would board the train from some specific stations like Ambala, Delhi, Moradabad or Haridwar. Once they had boarded the train, they would pick their target and wait for the target passenger’s destination station, according to the police.
When a train is about to reach a station, passengers usually move their luggage from their compartments to in front of the exit door, making the area and the passageway near it packed full with luggage, leaving little space to people to move. That would be the time when the gang would carry out their robbery.
The duo are involved in more than 15 other cases of train thefts, the police said.
