87-year-old Kaneti Mohana Rao, member of the first Lok Sabha who was felicitated yesterday during a function to mark the 60th anniversray of Parliament’s first sitting, has more than one reason to cheer about.
This is because Rao, who was eking out his livelihood by cultivating a small piece of land in his native village in Andhra Pradesh and drawing a pension of Rs 1400, will now get a revised pension of Rs 20,000 with effect from 2009.
This became possible after the Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Rajeev Shukla read a media report about the MP still receiving Rs 1,400 as pension.
The concerned officers met Mohan Rao, who was a CPI member from Rajahmundry Lok Sabha constituency, and ensured that he completed all the formalities to get the revised pension including the arrears totalling over Rs seven lakh.
Shukla told PTI that the MP will get the revised pension from this month itself.
Mohan Rao was the youngest MP in the first Lok Sabha. He got elected to Lok Sabha at the age of 27. He was a resident of Matlapalem village of Tallarevu block in East Godavari district.
Rao was among the four MPs of the first Lok Sabha who were felicitated by President Pratibha Patil and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh yesterday at a function in the Cemtral Hall of Parliament.
