Two teens drown during picnic

Hyderabad, November 04: Two 16-year-old students, who bunked college to have a picnic by a lake, met with a watery grave while another was rescued by a passerby, at Vanasthalipuram on Tuesday.

Two of the youngsters, P Shiva Kumar and G Vamsi Prabhu entered the waters of Pochamma Kunta at Almasguda and drowned even as their friend G S Wesley made a vain attempt to save them. Wesley too was about to drown in the lake, when an auto driver rescued him, police said.According to the police, the trio were classmates in Class X. After SSC, they joined different colleges. All the three hail from RND Nagar in Meerpet.

Shiva Kumar was an Intermediate first year student of Ideal Junior College at Dilsukhnagar and G Vamsi Prabhu was a polytechnic ECE student of BKR College of Engineering at Meerpet. Wesley is an Intermediate student of SR College at Dilsukhnagar.

“The youngsters bunked college and went to the Pochamma Kunta which was filled to the brim,” Vanasthalipuram police sub-inspector Raju said.
They initially spent some time on the banks of the lake plucking custard apples from nearby trees.

“Around 1.30 pm, Shiva Kumar and Vamsi Prabhu entered the waters to have a bath while Wesley remained on the banks. None of them knew swimming,” the SI said.

After frolicking in the waters for sometime, the duo went further inside and started drowning. Wesley, who was on the banks, made a vain attempt to pull out Vamsi Prabhu but he too started drowning and the trio raised an alarm for help.

“An auto driver, A Srinu, who was passing on the road heard the cries for help and rushed to their help. He could manage to rescue Wesley but the two others drowned,” Raju said.

Police said though Srinu did not know swimming, he risked his life and managed to rescue Wesley.

The bodies of Shiva Kumar and Vamsi Prabhu were retrieved and were shifted to the Osmania General Hospital for post-mortem.
