Two SFI leaders arrested

Vizianagaram, February 25: Students of Maharajah’s College (Autonomous), owing allegiance to SFI, boycotted classes and staged protest demonstrations at the college on Thursday against the indifferent attitude of the college management that forced D. Janardhana, a second year intermediate student, to consume pesticide on Wednesday. Police used force and dispersed the agitating students. U.S.N. Raju, SFI district vice-president and another office-bearer Poli Naidu were arrested.

Later, the students took out a rally from the college to the Collector’s Office demanding the government to release fee reimbursement and scholarships to SC, ST and BC students. They staged a dharna in front of the Collector’s Office and raised slogans against the government.

A. Jagan Mohan Reddy, SFI district secretary, alleged that the management did not permit Mr. Janardhana to appear for practical examination after he failed to remit fee.

Though examinations were scheduled for next month the district administration had still not completed verification of applicants’ eligibility for fee reimbursement and scholarships.

He also demanded the government to bear medical expenditure of Mr. Janardhana whose condition in King George Hospital in Visakhapatnam was stated to be stable. Later, they submitted a memorandum to District Revenue Officer Y. Narasimha Rao.
