Two poachers nabbed from Kaziranga National Park

Guwahati, May 23: Close on the heels of gunning down four poachers and nabbing seven, forest officials today nabbed two of them from the Kaziranga National Park.

Acting on a tip-off, the poachers were apprehended from Bhojmari area in the northern range of the park falling under Sonitpur district, forest officials said.

Two .303 rifles, three cartridges and an elephant tusk weighing half a kilogram was recovered from the two poachers, who have been identified as Anwar Islam and Azizur Rahman.

Forest guards and the police have stepped up operations against poachers inside the park, killing four of them on Friday and arresting seven, including a retired forest guard, on May 18.

Located on the banks of the Brahmaputra River in Assam, Kaziranga National Park covers an area of approximately 430-sq-kms with its swamps and tall thickets of elephant grass making it the ideal habitat for the Indian One-Horned Rhino.
