Two pipeline workers buried alive

Hyderabad, July 28: In a tragic incident, two workers were buried alive under the loose soil that caved in during sewer pipeline laying works at Ramanthapur on Monday evening. The incident took place at Indira Nagar opposite the Ramanthapur lake. The Rs 6.5 crore works to lay 35 sewer pipes passing through Ramanthapur were awarded to IVR Constructions Limited which dug up a 20-foot trench to lay the pipelines.

The construction company had already installed 23 pipes and works to lay the remaining 12 are underway.

After laying the pipes, the men were working on attaching the pipes when the mishap took place.

Two workers, Krishna and Venkatesh, both aged 30, were working in the 20-foot trench when the soil caved in. Both of them hail from Mahaboobnagar and were living in temporary huts erected at Golnaka.

As the soil caved in, the duo were buried under the heap of soil and died before rescue workers could reach them.

The incident took place around 5.30 pm. Krishna is survived by his wife Bhagyamma.

IVR Constructions project engineer A Nanda Kumar, who was supervising the works at the site, assured that the families of the deceased would be given compensation.

The construction company claimed that the vibrations caused by the vehicles passing by on the main road just adjacent to the trench might have loosened the soil resulting in the mishap.

Uppal police inspector B Bhaskar said the police would register a case under Section 304-a (rash and negligent act) against the company.
