Two persons including a women arrested on charges of duping people after collecting money by promising high returns

The city police on Friday arrested two persons including a women on charges of duping people after collecting money by promising high returns on their investment. The police recovered Rs. 2.5 lakh and 13.5 tolas of gold ornaments from them.

The arrested persons, Sayeeda Maliha Shireen alias Asma (35) and her accomplice, Mirza Asifullah Baig (24) both residents of the Sattarbagh in Kalapather duped at least three people of about Rs. 30 lakh.

The police said that Asma, whose husband stays in United States of America, would pretend to be a close relative of a businessman and lure people to invest money in their store promising good profits.

To gain the confidence of the people she would call Baig over phone. The latter would introduce himself as the shop owner and convince the person to invest the money in the apparel business promising high returns, Kalapather police station Inspector, M. A. Majeed said.

The duo cheated two persons Shamshuddin of Rs. 4 lakh and Tasleem Ghaleeb of Rs. 6.25 lakh and 40 tolas of gold ornaments in this manner. The incident came to light when the people approached the shop owner after the duo failed to pay them profits.

Basing on complaints made by Tasleema and Shamsuddin the police registered a case and arrested them. They were produced before a court which remanded them to judicial custody. (INN)
