Two Maoists held with ammunition in Jharkhand

The Jharkhand police on Wednesday arrested two Maoists with ammunition in the state’s Latehar district.

Latehar Superintendent of Police Michael Raj S said that his force had attained major success by arresting two notorious Maoists who were involved in several violent activities since 2011.

“Acting on a tip-off, we arrested a member of a Maoist organisation, Babulal Bhuiya, who is a resident of Deoghar. We have also arrested a Maoist supporter along with him. We have recovered 25 rounds of bullets along with a motorcycle that they used to travel for conducting their activities,” he said.

Michael added the arrested Maoists were involved in activities including firing at police, planning a bomb blast on National Highway 75 and others.

Meanwhile, a farmer-turned-Maoist activist who surrendered before the police on Tuesday in Odisha was produced in the court on Wednesday.

Chief of a Maoist-backed organisation, Nachika Linga remained underground for over four years, evading a non-bailable warrant against him. He was in the ‘most wanted’ list of Odisha police for his alleged involvement in attack on a local police station in 2009.

“Nachika Linga was the president of a farmers’ organisation. After considering their strong union, a Naxal group approached them and declared it as the frontal organisation of the Naxal group. The Naxals misused their union in order to carry out further violent activities in the region,” said Inspector General, South Western Range Yaswant Jethwa.

He added several social organisations and the police are taking required measures for rehabilitation of Linga and a team of police went to Linga’s village at the time he surrendered.

Jethwa said all initiatives will be taken to ensure Linga gets proper legal assistance to come clear at the court.

“I have no relation with the Naxals. I have links only with the farmers and tribal organisations. We think of the development of farmers and tribals with the help of government. But with Naxals I have no connection,” said Linga. (ANI)
