As scary as it sounds on World AIDS day APSACS reported. Telangana has the fourth highest incidence of HIV in the country, with two lakh people afflicted with the deadly HIV.
APSACS officials said as many as 8.05 million condoms had been distributed across Telangana till October 2014. According to Andhra Pradesh State AIDS Control Society report, Mahboob Nagar district stood first with HIV prevalence of 1.34 per cent, followed by East Godavari and Guntur with 0.83 per cent against the State’s mean of 0.61 p.c.
This was achieved by conducting several community-based awareness programmes involving different sections of the society. Mayor K. Sridhar, who was chief guest for the programme, said though the people have achieved new Technology, but moral values are dying among people. These days, with parents being employed, they were not spending quality time with their children and as a result, they are falling prey to anti-social elements, he said.
Vasavya Mahila Mandali president Ch. Vidya said it was the responsibility of every person to eradicate HIV from society. She explained about different initiatives and programme taken up by the mandali. Earlier, students of the mandali came up with an impressive dance performance.
“There must be HIV screenings for all pregnant women so that the the disease is not transmitted to the child. Blood banks should be wary of not using blood of a HIV victim,” Dr Govardhan added.
