Pune, April 10: TWO jawans of the Rajputana Rifles have been arrested for raping a 19- year- old girl in Pune on Wednesday.
The two armymen were arrested on Friday and a case has been registered against them, the police said.
The army personnel were nabbed after they continued to harass their victim after raping her.
The incident took place on Wednesday evening when the victim and her boyfriend were travelling on a motorbike near Chinchwad.
According to investigating officer Bhagwat Sonawane, the girl and her friend were accosted by the two armymen at 9.30pm when their bike ran out of fuel. The jawans, Rajneesh Kumar Sureshchandra from Uttar Pradesh and Suminder Singh Mahipal Singh from Rajasthan, first beat up the boyfriend.
They then forcibly took the girl to a ground nearby and raped her after beating her up, Sonawane said.
The assailants also took away the victim’s cellphone. Later, the girl along with her friend lodged a complaint at the Sangavi police station.
Even after the attack the accused continued to call up the girl and her friend.
The Pune assistant commissioner of police Vishnu Mane said the girl and the boy got two calls from the assailants asking the girl to meet them again.
It was then that the police laid a trap by sending the girl to meet them on Friday morning and nabbed the two army men. The two accused were produced in a court which remanded them in the police custody till April 15.
This is the second case of rape in Pune in eight days. Last Thursday, a girl who had returned from the US after completing her MBA was raped by three men.
